Young Pluto (born Joseph William Dudley Brown, September 13, 1871 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada - died March 3, 1931) was a South African featherweight boxer, who was based out of Australia for much of his career. His career record was 17-9-12.
He first arrived in South Africa at the age of 7. In Port Elizabeth, at age 16 he won 2 four rounders against Young Sultan and Young Berry. He then left for Australia, arriving in Melbourne. His career in Australia got off to a good start as he beat Young Brown and then had a draw and a win against Young Scott. In 1888 and 1889, he fought Young Griffo to 5 straight draws. One of these fights lasted for seventy rounds. It had been decided beforehand that if both boxers were still standing that it would be declared a draw, however, it is accepted that Young Griffo had been the better boxer during the fight. In 1894, he beat Bennie Marks to win the West Australia lightweight title. He then left Australia for the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon. His next bout was against Kid Williams in Alaska, which he won. He then went onto lose the next 7 bouts, one of which came against George Dixon for the World featherweight title. He became the first South African to fight for a World title, however, Dixon KO'd him in the 10th round. Pluto finally finished his career in 1911 with a knockout win over Alec Rogers.
